What is Medigap Plan B?
Once you are enrolled into Medicare Parts A and B you have several options to choose from when it comes to a Medicare Supplement Plan ( also known as Medigap). Medigap Plans help you cover some of your out-of-pocket costs that get passed on to you from Original Medicare, Part A and B. These costs can come from your deductibles, copays and coinsurance. In this post we will focus on Medigap Plan B.
Medigap Plan B is one of the 10 standardized supplement options you have to choose from ( Wisconsin, Massachusetts, and Minnesota have their own standardized plans). Each lettered plan has a set of benefits that remain the same no matter which company you purchase it through. You can call us at 866-319-5886 to get a personal consultation to determine what is best for you.
Keep in mind that Medigap Plan B is not the same as Original Medicare Part B. Part B of Original Medicare is your coverage through Medicare that helps pay towards your medical services. Medigap plans help cover some of those expenses passed on to you from Part B.
What does Medigap Plan B Cover?
Medigap Plan B covers the following:
- Medicare Part B copayments and coinsurance
- The first three pints of blood you get as a hospital inpatient or outpatient ( Original Medicare will usually cover any pints you get after the first three)
- Medicare Part A deductible
- Medicare Part A hospital expenses and coinsurance up to 365 additional days after your Medicare benefits run out
- Hospice care copay or coinsurance under Part A
Medigap Plan B does not cover:
- Your Medicare Part B deductible ($185 annually for 2019)
- Medicare Part B Excess Charges
- Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
- Foreign travel emergency care
Medicare supplement Plan B is a private insurance offered by insurance companies to help cover some of your gaps in your Part A and B coverage. Availability of this plan can change based on a person’s location and by company. Many companies may have a Plan B option in your area and they can charge differently from one company to the next but the benefits for a Plan B Medicare supplement stay the same. Once again, benefits of Medicare supplement plans are standardized by Medicare meaning Plan B from company XYZ will have the same benefits as a Plan B from company ABC.
